We looked around for years to find the perfect spaghetti sauce because well if we were serious with ourselves we would admit that the store bought stuff is just nasty. Even if you doctor it up. We have added and taken things out of this sauce over the years as needs have arisen. (being pregnant with the last one the mushrooms had to come out because the thought of them being in it was enough force to make my belly empty itself) But it has been tried and true and turns out wonderful when doubled for extra mouths that show up.
1 lb sausage
1 onion, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 tsp diced garlic
brown these over medium heat until the meat is cooked and the veggies soft
32 oz tomato sauce
1 small can tomato soup, undiluted
1 14 1/2oz can petite diced tomatoes
1 tsp dried basil (if using fresh it is about 10 leaves)
1/2 tsp crushed rosemary
1/2 tsp oregano
1/2 tsp dried thyme
place all of these into a crock pot. Add the meat mixture and mix to combine.
(You can cook this on the stove and it takes 45 minutes on low heat. I just dont have the time for standing by the stove and plus when in the crock pot your home smells wonderful!)
Cook on low for about 4-5 hours. The last 1/2 hour I remove the lid so it will thicken a bit. Serve over hot noodles and enjoy! It serves about 6 adults.
Edit: we use this for lasagna sauce, pizza sauce.... whatever you may need red sauce for. ( there is only a meat ball in the picture cause the kids wanted meatballs with it tonight)
